Introduction

Ross Caviness is a native of Denver Heights in San Antonio, Texas where he attended Central Catholic High School. He went on to earn degrees from Huston-Tillotson University in Austin and Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Caviness first became interested in the French artistry faux bois (fake wood) as a young boy because of the many examples of it found throughout the Alamo City. It fascinated him that concrete could be made to look like wood – whether in the form of simple picnic tables, decorative flower pots in neighbors’ yards, huge canopied bus stop benches, and even trees. He vowed to one day learn the technique. In later years he did so from artist Donald Tucker.
While perfecting that craft, Ross further developed an interest in sand pudding, a process perfected by Elder Jones.
